THE ULTIMATE
Welcome To My Life Is An Adventure - by Dawitt Abraha Rather playfully; young French philosopher; Xavier de Maistre’s "A journey round my room" was a book he wrote in 1790. His suggestive insight: that the pleasure we derive from journeys is perhaps dependent more on the mindset with which we travel than on the destination we travel to. At some point in the 1650s, the French philosopher and mathematician, Blaise Pascal, jotted down one of the most counterintuitive aphorisms of all time: ‘The sole cause of man’s unhappiness is that he cannot stay quietly in his room.’ EARLY LIFE (by Dawitt Abraha) I was born into a devout orthodox Christian family near Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, northeast Africa. I am the product of an arranged marriage set up between the chiefs of two neighbouring and feuding villages that were convened as a means of uniting both communities. Growing up I witnessed the social skills, equipoise and equanimity that go into successful conflict resolutions. I was fortunate to have witnessed civil dialogue and peaceful approaches to conducting opposing factionalism. The earliest consequential influences during my formative years were my dear and loving parents, especially my father; Abraha Wolde-Gabriel. Father was of a larger-than-life presence. He impressed and had a positive affect on everything he touched. My father had been very successful at all he engaged in; namely in creating and building successful businesses and at developing familial and social relationships. He passed away on June of 1980 at a hospital in Asmara, Eritrea. His funeral had a semblance of a rock concert gathering, a form of wake, respected and attended by people from all walks of life. My family and I still miss him dearly, departed but never forgotten, even after the passing of so many years. Another earlier influence on my life was my maternal grandfather. l describe him as a sage, as a philosopher, as a man of the law, as a homeopath and as a naturopath medicine man. I also had significant lasting impressions on me given from teachers, from friends and from my expansive readings. I always enjoyed conversing with homeless people who evidently had no qualms expressing their opinions without restrictions of calling. My mainstay philosophy has been to respect that "the pleasures of madness, are only known to the madman". Towards the end of my teen years I left my native Eritrea to pursue a university education and to explore the world. I have lived and or worked in several Eastern and Southern African countries; followed by visits to Europe and Canada. I became a naturalized American citizen where I studied, lived and worked a good chunk of my adult life, mostly in the East coast of the United States around Washington DC. I have the privilege of finding "home" in different avenues of life from international and local travel, writing travelogue stories, poetry, music and dance, from engaging in exchanges of ideas and experiences, taking various classes, from teachings to spending time with friends and sometimes with family and enjoying a variety of delicious foods, including chi gong (a holistic system of coordinated body posture and movement), philosophy; yoga, meditation ,tai chi, cycling, swimming, hiking and climbing up the mountains. However; I am consciously and conscientiously taking actions to progress myself and to develop my world around me. I honor myself and everybody else. I strive to be part of a community of a world where an equitable distribution of opportunities is respected.and a society where the scientific method is of primacy in public political economic policy. My activities juicify my life! After living a busy and productive life, I decided to take advantage from the fruits of my labours, retiring to Northern Thailand in 2013 and becoming a gentleman of leisure. THE STORY OF MY DAILY LIFE IN NORTHERN THAILAND: 2013 - Present Most mornings: I get up early, I do my morning workout of yoga stretches and cardio-vascular exercises and regularly practice meditation. You can find me enjoying a bowl of cereals, mixed fruits laced with yogurt. I ceremoniously mindfully brew a spicy pot of hot tea out of many regional varieties. I am good, good, good, good! Sometimes: I teach friends in the mornings. I read and write about somethings most of the time, and occasionally write on some technical analysis in the afternoons and in the evenings. I enjoy going to the movies, hanging out Jazz n Blues clubs, eating out, walking and hiking. I lift weights either inside my apartment or at the gym. Weekly: I assist with Anthony, the organisation of a Chiang Mai expats social group on a completely voluntary basis. We prepare the itineraries for all our group events, book the venues, chair the meetings and manage the online part of the group. Monthly: I participate in philosophy and also attend poetry or creative writing meetings/gatherings. And at other times I enjoy exploring and discovering the many cozy and exquisite designer (tea) cafes (coffee) and coffee houses (coffee) (coffee) (tea) of Chiang Mai and of the surrounding towns. Occasionally: I get to spend time with my Chiang Mai friends. I play host to my visiting friends and family from the US and call up friends and family dispersed around the globe. I do like to travel locally and especially internationally as well. I was up on the summit (Doi Ang Kham) in Northern Thailand from 12-15 April 2017. It is cool up there at 1400 meters above sea level. Three weeks ago I did a two-day fruit farm visit in Ban Mae Aow, PaSang, in the Lamphun district of Northern Thailand. I visited Vietnam this year (2018) and plan a visit back to Hawaii briefly to take care of business and hang out with old friends. (Travel) (travel) (travel) (travel). Last year, March/April 2016, I had a great time visiting China. I have been enjoying the many, many picturesque, colourful and exotic outdoor and indoor activities, events and festivals in and around Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. This year I did not participate in the Songkran (13-15 April) festival, aka as the epic annual Water Festival. Life is sabai sabai that's Thai language for good. I enjoy going to the movies, hanging out (jazz) Jazz n Blues clubs, eating out, walking and hiking. But I am also alone sometimes, accompanied by my laptop computer, by my wondering mind, by my books and most of the time, unfortunately, there is a tolerably healthy amount of aloneness.
